General Capabilities

  • Literacy - Literacy involves students listening to, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating oral, print, visual and digital texts, and using and modifying language for different purposes in a range of contexts (ACARA, 2016). Through the use of a WebQuest, students are given multiple opportunities to navigate, explore and communicate through different texts online. This is a skill that will assist students within later years of school, and also within every day life.

  • Numeracy - Numeracy encompasses the knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that students need to use mathematics in a wide range of situations (ACARA, 2016). Students are developing their numeracy skills within this unit as they work through understanding and utilising binary numbers. With the use of practical tasks, students are more easily able to relate this to every day life and utilise it in other areas.

  • ICT -  ICT capability involves students learning to make the most of the digital technologies available to them, adapting to new ways of doing things as technologies evolve and limiting the risks to themselves and others in a digital environment (ACARA, 2016). Students are working with ICTs and understanding different things that ICT can do whilst working through the tasks and activities within the WebQuest. Students will also be understanding more of the digital environment whilst posting onto the class blog and through discussions on ethical protocols whilst being online.

  • Critical and Creative Thinking - Critical and creative thinking involves students thinking broadly and deeply using skills, behaviours and dispositions such as reason, logic, resourcefulness, imagination and innovation (ACARA, 2016). Students are given multiple opportunities to think critically and creatively throughout this WebQuest and determine different ways that binary numbers can be utilised.

  • Personal and Social Capabilities - Personal and social capability involves students in a range of practices including establishing and building positive relationships, making responsible decisions, working effectively in teams, handling challenging situations constructively and developing leadership skills (ACARA, 2016). Students are able to develop their skills in regards to all of these things through the blog posting. Students will need to understand the impact their words can have on others and be able to comment with constructive and motivational feedback.

Digital Technologies Teacher's Page

The webquest designed for this unit is intended to be a resource used that is accompanied by explicit teaching, group activities and general class lessons that will give students the opportunity and ability to gain the skills required to complete the activities within the booklet. If students have no prior experience with webquests, this would also be a skill that may need to be taught before students are expected to navigate the webquest individually.

Differentiation - The following list is made up of possible ideas to differentiate this resource to meet the requirements of your class of students.

  • Some students may require additional assistance with navigating the Webquest.

  • Certain students may require the tasks to be printed and completed without the use of ICTs.

  • Some students may need additional assistance in completing class tasks that lead up to the activities in the WebQuest - this will ensure they have the necessary knowledge and skills to complete each task.

  • Higher level students may require additional tasks that extend their knowledge and understanding of each topic and demonstrate their ability with binary numbers.
